What are skin cancers?

Skin cancers are cancers that arise from the skin. They are due to the development of abnormal cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

What are main causes for skin cancers?

Smoking tobacco
HPV infections which increase the chance of getting skin cancers
Certain genetic syndromes
Chronic non-healing wounds
Ionizing radiation

Major Types of Skin Cancers

There are three major types of skin cancer:

basal cell carcinoma: the most common one. Basal cell carcinoma usually presents as a raised, smooth, pearly bump on the sun-exposed skin of the head, neck or shoulders.
squamous cell carcinoma: the second most common one. Squamous cell carcinoma appears as a red, scaling, thickened patch on sun-exposed skin. When this kind of cancer is not treated in time, it may develop into a large mass and ulceration and bleeding may occur.
melanoma: which originates from the pigment-producing skin cells but is less common and more dangerous than other two types. It consists of various colours from shades of brown to black. Warning signs of malignant melanoma include change in the size, shape, color or elevation of a mole as well as the appearance of a new mole during adulthood or pain, itching, ulceration, redness around the site, or bleeding at the site.
